At home, how do you watch a movie? Do you use your iPad, AppleTV, Netflix, laptop... is portable media obsolete or almost obsolete? Does this affect the Outdoor Movie business. I believe that it does. The studios hate discs because encryption is easy to break so the content is so easily pirated. I believe content will live on a device ie iTunes but eventually moves onto the cloud ie iTunes match.
Turning this "belief" into something actionable required us to rethink how we look at our outdoor movie packages, so we devised the iSeries Outdoor Movie Package, which offers a Mac based playback platform with BluRay and storage/cloud based capabilities. The goal was to offer something for today and tomorrow.

Hearing impaired and deaf outdoor movie viewers
We regularly are asked to display subtitles at our outdoor movie events and endeavor to provide subtitles when requested by deaf and hearing impaired patrons.
I recently received an email from a colleague with a good question, "Most of the time when we get a request for captioning, we simply select the English subtitles. This week at a show the dvd didn't offer English subtitles and we could not figure out how to access any closed captions. It seems the problem is in the authoring of the dvd. Broadcast signals must have closed captions but apparently the same rules do not apply to dvd authoring or dvd player manufacturers. Anyone else have any experience with this issue?".
I answered that he was correct. Most newer DVD's are authored to offer accessibility to our deaf brothers and sisters using subtitles. Older titles often offer subtitles only in other languages. The DVD description online has this info so you can be prepared in advance.
IMDB used to offer more complete DVD/BluRay details but no longer does. Amazon does however off this info. So for outdoor movie operators, it is fairly easy to do the research.

Outdoor Movie Operators Feel the Heat - Really!
So if the economy isn't so hot, the weather sure is! The Northeast, Mid-Atlantic and Southeast have been suffering through record heat.
Outdoor movie operators have definitely lost a few pounds sweating through their load-ins! During load-in for the first Screen on the Green, the temps stayed pretty steady at 103 degrees. I want to show my respect to our crews, and to all those who work their butts off in this heat on a regular basis. Paul and Susan Murray, our partners at Southern Outdoor Cinema, Nick Toutoungi at Twilight Features, and Joe and Barbara Williams at Blue Moon Cinemas in Texas. Hey, I know I didn't mention everyone... but those in the heat belt that do this regularly... they are my heroes.
You don't need me to tell you to stay hydrated (if you don't you pass out).
If you are a customer of an outdoor movie operator, show your appreciation by paying your vendor fairly and handing them cold water!
Stay cool!!

Inflatable screen - Safety Part 3 - You
In this series we look at possible injuries you might sustain operating an outdoor movie screen or package. This list is by no means complete and is meant simply as thought provoking article, not medical advice. Speak with a doctor about your particular situation if you have a concern.
1. Back strain/injury - when moving heavy items, exercise basic common sense! If in doubt get help! If you haven't lifted anything over the winter, you are out of shape. Use good biomechanics or a back brace. Also, if you can get the equipment to where you will be using it, there is less wok for you. In short be careful, get help, don't be a hero.
2. Shoulder injury - any work involving stress which takes place above your shoulder involves the risk of shoulder injury. Generally speaking, while holding screen tethers, do not do so above shoulder level. This is important! Also, repeating myself, use good biomechanics. I dislocated a shoulder trying to lift a subwoofer into a cargo van, I was stooped over and turned so that the speaker was slightly behind me. You don't want to do this it hurts!
3. Sun and dehydration - doing a setup on a 95 degree day with 95% humidity will drain you. Drink fluids to the point where you urinate every hour up to one liter of fluid per hour. Take breaks and know your limits. Do not wear a black outfit and use a baseball cap as well. It is tempting to forgo sunscreen when doing an install because you sweat it off pretty quickly and its sticky nature just makes more dirt stick to you. Use the sunscreen anyway! And reapply frequently.
These three bits of advice may seem completely common sense but you would shocked how often they are not followed. Staying uninjured and comfortable through the season is our wish for you from Outdoor Movies!

Spring is here!!! Outdoor Movie season arrives... are you ready?
'Tis the season for outdoor movies. This winter was a particularly tough one around the entire USA, so that makes the nicer weather all that much more welcome.
The beginning of the season for many is the first time they have pulled out their screens and outdoor movie equipment in many months. Of course in a perfect world, everything is in perfect order. It pays to check that everything is operational and if you are an organization, you set up an evening for a practice run, especially if there are new people on the team.
Sometimes, you find that equipment is missing or damaged. At Outdoor Movies, we have spare parts like blowers, stakes and are capable of helping you with many repair needs. Give us a call at (301) 838-4544 x106 if we can help. You'll be speaking with Shane. He knows pretty much everything there is to know about screens, electronics and what is repairable and what has to be replaced. we carry front and rear replacement surfaces for any outdoor screen with 20cm spacing. If you have a size not standard for AIRSCREEN, we can have one manufactured for you to our exacting performance standards.
We have invested in an RF welder so that we are able to do weld repairs on PVC screen frames should you need them.
All the best and stay tuned for more posts!

Storage and maintenance of your outdoor movie projector
Our last post dealt with storing your inflatable screen for the winter. If you have an outdoor movie package purchased from us at Outdoor Movies or elsewhere, you will want to take a good look at your projector and store it carefully. First and most importantly, locate the air intake and look for the air filter. During outdoor use, the projector's filter protects the internal components from dirt and dust. If the filter is dirty, it restricts airflow. Restricted airflow causes decreased bulb life, overheating and reduced performance. So remove the filter. Most are made from foam rubber and easily cleaned with water and then dried. Some need to be replaced. Either way, this is an important preventative maintenance step. Additionally, dust that is apparent to the eye should be removed using a clean dry cloth.
Lens cleaning - if you have a lens cleaning kit that includes: lens paper, a camel hair brush and lens cleaning solution, terrific. If not, one can be obtained from a reputable camera store (or from us). Use solutions sparingly using with light pressure and a circular motion to remove dust and fingerprints. If you have lost the lens cap, now is a great time to replace it, as well.
Remove the batteries from the remote control, and check to make sure you have your necessary cables and adapters.
That should do it! Your outdoor movie package's projector should be ready to store.
Keep warm,
Bob Deutsch

Pics from recent projects
So here is photo from Palm Springs International Film Festival... NetFlix bought a screen... kinda cool.
And we recently took a field trip to the Dubai International Film Festival... Where they are the proud owners of a 65' Airscreen from Outdoor Movies. The city is being built just as fast as they can. I did ski indoors in the mall at Ski Dubai and rode the obligatory camel.

So I meant to post (am I a bad blogger?)
Life in the Outdoor Movie production business is NEVER boring and never left me much time for blogging. So since '06, we bought a second 65' screen, purchased two 20,000 lumen Christie projectors. Major film fetivals added outdoor components. I met Harrison Ford.
We sold more than 150 complete Outdoor Movie systems with: inflatable screen, projector, sound to universities, military, local governments... and screens to 15 or so contries!!!
In my next post, I want to comment on product developments, the backyard theater phenom and more. Make your comment on anything outdoor movie related and I'll respond - promise!
